Heartland Forest is a 93 acre, environmentally protected wetland area, in Niagara Falls, Canada, which was rescued in 1999 from a local zoning by-law designating it for Industrial use. Although Heartland Forest is environmentally protected, and is one of the largest in the Niagara region, it shelters and represents only a small fraction of this areas' flora and fauna. Our position is that if the general public were to learn the function and life saving properties its' existence represents, far more of the woodlots and small forests would themselves be saved from the developers axes and shovels. It is a good example of Forest Stewardship and Conservation. The Heartland Forest Nature Experience Program, written by Paul Philp HBa. BEd. the Educational Coordinator, is fully compatible with the current Ontario Curriculum Guidelines. It comes equipped with a fully functional classroom administered by a knowledgeable teaching staff who conduct the tours through the property. A trail system some 2.5 miles long with periodic learning stations and signage to tell the tales of the flora and fauna is fully accessible by wheelchair as well as the general public. The program is operational throughout the school year and available to all elementary and high schools as well as nature clubs or other organizations interested in the great outdoors.
