The key feature of Heartland Forest is 93 acres of rare
Carolinian forest, one of the largest remaining stands
in Niagara. It has been designated Environmentally
Protected.
This forest is a living example of environmental stewardship in action. These woodlands, which were slated for industrial use, were rescued in 1999 for the purposes of preservation, public education and enjoyment.
Besides the portable school room with its desks and
blackboards, Heartland Forest incorporates a system of trails that enables visitors to view all of the various habitats: the forest, wetlands, ponds, and upland areas. These habitats showcase unique wildlife, plants and insects.
Barrier free learning and living history act as a
gateway to the forest. Learning centers, spotted along
the trails, act as gathering points for families, school groups and other guests participating in ecological tours of the forest.
Tours conducted by our Resident Naturalists have been
well received by the educational community and are
readily available for a minimal fee of $5/participant.
Such conducted tours, which involve a 2 hour in-class lecture and field
trip, may be booked by any group (max. of 20
participants/group) by emailing your request to
booking@forestdiscovery.ca
